Sam Shepherd, the Manchester born producer and DJ behind the Floating Points name, operates somewhere between electronic club music and modern classical composition, and the gap between those worlds suits him perfectly. His 2015 debut album Elaenia scored near universal acclaim, and he followed it with Reflections: Mojave Desert, a record literally captured in the desert while his band was out rehearsing and exploring the landscape. The 2021 collaborative album Promises, made with jazz legend Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, reached number six in the UK Albums Chart and earned a Mercury Prize nomination. He also leads the Floating Points Ensemble, a 16 piece live group, runs his own Pluto Records label, and has remixed the likes of Thundercat, Caribou, and Skepta. More recently he composed an original score for a San Francisco Ballet production and contributed music to the 2025 anime series Lazarus.
