Jamie xx, the London based producer and DJ also known as James Smith, has built a reputation that runs far deeper than his role in the indie pop group the xx. His ear for texture and mood has shaped some genuinely striking collaborations: a full remix album reworking Gil Scott Heron's final record, a production credit on Drake's "Take Care" featuring Rihanna, and a ballet score commissioned by Manchester International Festival. His 2015 solo debut In Colour landed at number three on the UK Albums Chart and earned both a Mercury Prize nomination and a Grammy nod for Best Dance/Electronic Album. His output since then has kept that same adventurous spirit. In 2024 he put out his second album In Waves, pulling in Robyn, The Avalanches, and Honey Dijon alongside his xx bandmates Romy and Oliver Sim. Critics responded warmly, with the record scoring 84 out of 100 on Metacritic. Away from his own records, he has produced Oliver Sim's Hideous Bastard and co produced Romy's Mid Air, cementing his place as the connective tissue holding the xx's extended universe together.
