Few artists defined the early 1970s soft rock sound quite like James Taylor. His 1970 single "Fire and Rain" cracked the top three, and a year later he had his first number one with "You've Got a Friend", a Carole King composition that became one of his signature songs. His 1976 Greatest Hits album went Diamond and has moved 11 million copies in the US, placing it among the best selling albums in American history. Every record he put out between 1977 and 2007 crossed the million copy mark, and his combined US sales sit at a certified 33 million. Taylor's catalog stretches well beyond the obvious hits. Covers like "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" and "Handy Man" sit comfortably alongside originals like "Sweet Baby James", and he even took a detour into film with a leading role in Monte Hellman's 1971 road movie Two Lane Blacktop. He picked up six Grammy Awards over his career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. His 2015 album Before This World gave him his first US number one album, proof that his audience never really went anywhere.
