Kim Wilde holds a record that still stands: the most charted British female solo act of the 1980s, with seventeen UK Top 40 hits across the decade. Her debut single 'Kids in America' shot to number 2 in the UK in 1981 and remains her signature track, though her cover of the Supremes' 'You Keep Me Hangin' On' is arguably her biggest commercial moment. That Hi NRG rework topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1987, making her only the fifth UK female solo artist ever to reach number one in America. Her 1988 album Close was her best seller, producing four major European hits including 'You Came' and 'Never Trust a Stranger', and she spent that same year opening for Michael Jackson on the Bad World Tour across Europe. Wilde's pop run stretched well beyond the obvious hits. She collaborated with Nena in 2003 on 'Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime', which topped the charts in the Netherlands and Austria. Away from music, she built a second career as a landscape gardener, presenting shows on the BBC and Channel 4, and in 2005 took home a Gold award at the Chelsea Flower Show.
