Few bands pull off the genre blending trick as naturally as Lake Street Dive. Formed at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, the group built a following on the strength of Rachael Price's powerfully soulful voice and a sound that moves freely between indie pop, jazz, soul, and disco without ever feeling scattered. Their breakthrough moment came from an unlikely place: a street corner Jackson 5 cover of "I Want You Back" that racked up over 6 million YouTube views and gave the band a visibility no press campaign could have bought. Signing with Nonesuch Records in 2015 kicked things into a higher gear. Albums like Side Pony and Free Yourself Up showed a band confident enough to push into new territory, and their reach extended well beyond the US to include tours through Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. They even wrote the Emmy nominated theme song for the Netflix show Somebody Feed Phil. With guitarist James Cornelison joining in 2021 after founding member Mike Olson's departure, the band continues evolving while keeping that warm, genre hopping core intact.
