Eight people, one seriously soulful sound. St. Paul & The Broken Bones formed in Birmingham, Alabama in 2012 when vocalist Paul Janeway and bassist Jesse Phillips reunited for what they thought would be a quick last project, only to walk out of the studio with something worth keeping. They recorded their debut EP before ever playing a live show, and by the time their first full album Half the City dropped in 2014, produced by Ben Tanner of the Alabama Shakes and recorded partly at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, it shot up the Billboard 200 and earned them coverage everywhere from Rolling Stone to NPR. Since then, the band has shared stages with the Rolling Stones, played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Glastonbury and Pinkpop, and turned up on seemingly every late night TV show going. Their 2022 album The Alien Coast, released on ATO Records, pushed their sound somewhere unexpected, weaving in psychedelic rock, stoner metal and hip hop influenced beats alongside the funk and soul that made their name. Greek mythology and dystopian sci fi served as touchstones for that one, which tells you something about how far they have travelled from their Birmingham roots.
