Madison Cunningham plays guitar like someone who grew up absorbing church music, jazz harmony, and alt rock all at once, and somehow makes that collision feel completely natural. Rolling Stone pegged her sound as a new spin on West Coast folk rock, with classical tendencies, jazz school chord changes, and electric guitars all sharing space. Her 2019 album Who Are You Now earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album, and then Revealer, her third studio album from 2022, went one better by winning the Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2023. Her covers EP Wednesday, which takes on Tom Waits, Radiohead, John Mayer, and the Beatles, shows the same restless range. She has also built a compelling collaborative side to her work. A frequent presence on Live from Here with Chris Thile, she also contributed vocals to Andrew Bird's My Finest Work Yet. In 2024, she and Bird released Cunningham Bird, a full cover of the 1973 Buckingham Nicks album, the sole studio record the Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks duo made before joining Fleetwood Mac. Her fourth solo album, Ace, followed in 2025.
