Few voices carry the weight of history quite like Mavis Staples. She came up as the driving force behind the Staple Singers, the Chicago family group that became the sound of the civil rights movement, recording landmark hits like "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again" and earning the nickname "God's Greatest Hitmakers". Her deep, raw contralto has been sampled by everyone from Salt 'N' Pepa to Ludacris, and she has recorded alongside Bob Dylan, Prince, Ry Cooder, Arcade Fire, and David Byrne. Her solo work only got sharper with time. You Are Not Alone from 2010 hit number one on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart and brought her a first solo Grammy win. More albums with producer Jeff Tweedy followed, including One True Vine and If All I Was Was Black, and she appeared on Hozier's single "Nina Cried Power". She has since picked up five solo Grammys in total, a Kennedy Center Honor, and spots in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
