Few German artists have matched the international reach of Nena, the stage name of Gabriele Susanne Kerner. The song "99 Luftballons", released in 1983 with her band of the same name, became a genuine global phenomenon: the German original hit number two in the US while an English version topped the charts in the UK. That is a rare double for any act singing in a language other than English. After the band split in 1987, her solo debut arrived just days before the fall of the Berlin Wall, forever linking her song "Wunder gescheh'n" to that moment. The 1990s were quieter commercially, but a clever move in 2002 changed everything. Working again with former bandmate and keyboard player Uwe Fahrenkrog Petersen, Nena reworked the old Nena band hits into fresh arrangements for the album Nena feat. Nena. The record pulled in both longtime fans and a new generation, relaunching her career and pushing her total record sales past 25 million, making her the most successful German pop act in chart history.
