Perfume Genius, the project of Mike Hadreas, makes music that refuses to stay in one place: his sound moves through art pop, chamber pop, and electronic textures, with lyrics that tackle sexuality, Crohn's disease, domestic abuse, and the very real dangers facing gay men. His third album Too Bright, co produced by Portishead's Adrian Utley, marked a clear turning point, and the single 'Queen' landed him on The Late Show with David Letterman. His fourth album No Shape, produced by Blake Mills and mixed by Shawn Everett, pushed things further still, earning an 8.8 from Pitchfork and a 'Best New Album' nod. Beyond records, Hadreas has collaborated with Sharon Van Etten on a Grateful Dead cover, recorded with Cate Le Bon, and even contributed a fragrance campaign track for Prada. His sixth album Ugly Season grew out of a contemporary dance piece, which gives you a sense of how far his ambitions stretch.
