About
Melbourne's Playlunch have carved out a genuinely weird and wonderful niche with what they call "bogan funk", a sound that pairs tight, groovy instrumentation with lyrics stuffed full of hyperspecific Australian references. Zooper Doopers, Healthy Harold, Coles supermarkets, the show Kath & Kim: this seven piece band treat everyday Aussie life as rich comedic material, and it works. Their debut LP Who's Ready For a Good Time landed in 2023, with "Soupe Opera" going viral on TikTok to kick things off. Their 2025 follow up Sex Ed pushed them further into the spotlight. The single "Keith", a song about a bloke who loses his mind over people stealing his parking spot, went viral and landed at number four in the Triple J Hottest 100. The video starred AFL player Barry Hall, and the band even set up a hotline for fans to share their own Keith stories. With a cover of "It's Raining Men" for Triple J's Like a Version also in the mix, Playlunch are clearly having a lot of fun with it all.
