About
Sabaton have built an entire career on one very specific obsession: war. The Swedish power metal band from Falun writes almost exclusively about historical conflicts, battles, and the people caught up in them, and it works spectacularly well. Their 2005 debut Primo Victoria kicked off the theme, inspired in part by vocalist Joakim Brodén and bassist Pär Sundström watching Saving Private Ryan together. From there they kept going, releasing ten more studio albums over the following two decades, covering everything from World War II to the Swedish empire under Karl XII on the 2012 concept album Carolus Rex. The band has weathered some serious turbulence, most notably when two thirds of the lineup walked out in 2012, leaving Brodén and Sundström to rebuild from scratch. The new lineup hit their stride fast: 2014's Heroes went to number one in Sweden and opened the door to new markets including Japan. Along the way Sabaton have crossed into gaming culture too, contributing music to strategy titles like Hearts of Iron IV and Europa Universalis IV. Their eleventh studio album Legends arrived in 2025, showing no signs of slowing down.
