Shinedown holds a record that no other act on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts can touch: 23 number one singles, and every single they have ever released has landed in the top five. That kind of consistency, built out of Jacksonville, Florida since 2001, is what sets this hard rock outfit apart. Fronted by Brent Smith with a lineup that eventually settled around guitarist Zach Myers, bassist Eric Bass, and drummer Barry Kerch, the band carved out a sound that moves between muscular post grunge and polished rock radio territory. Their breakthrough came with the debut album Leave a Whisper and its string of charting singles, including a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" and the fan favourite "45". The Sound of Madness pushed them into a bigger league, and they have kept releasing records ever since, most recently Planet Zero in 2022 and Eight in 2025. With over 10 million records sold worldwide, Billboard ranked them the greatest Mainstream Rock artist of all time on the chart's 40th anniversary.
