About
Also known as: S.O.A.D., SOAD, Soil, System Of Down, システム・オブ・ア・ダウン
System of a Down built their reputation on a sound that sits somewhere between thrashing metal and theatrical weirdness, with politically charged lyrics that take on the war on drugs, the prison industrial complex, and anti war sentiment in songs like "Prison Song" and "B.Y.O.B." The band formed in Glendale, California, and all four members are of Armenian descent, which shapes both their musical palette and their activism. "B.Y.O.B." won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2006, and three of their five studio albums debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. They have sold over 12 million records worldwide. After going on hiatus in 2006 and reuniting in 2010, the band went well over a decade without releasing new studio material. That changed in late 2020, when they put out two new tracks, "Protect the Land" and "Genocidal Humanoidz", both tied to raising awareness of the conflict in Artsakh. The songs showed the band as sharp and politically engaged as ever, and proved that System of a Down still have plenty to say.
