About
Also known as: Nottwist, Notwist, The Nottwist
Few German bands have reinvented themselves as thoroughly as The Notwist. Starting out in Weilheim in Oberbayern in 1989 with a grunge metal sound, they gradually shed that skin and found their footing in a space where indie rock meets electronica. That shift paid off most visibly with Neon Golden in 2002, a warmly received album that introduced them to a whole new audience in the US. Their collaborators over the years read like an indie dream list: remixes from Four Tet, Caribou, Grizzly Bear and Panda Bear, plus a full side project with Themselves called 13 & God. They kept evolving through lineup changes and stylistic detours, including a film soundtrack and a stint on Sub Pop for Close to the Glass in 2014. Influences they name themselves include Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth, which tells you something about the sprawl of what they do. Their most recent studio album, Vertigo Days, came out in 2021.
