Sascha Ring, who records as Apparat, started out making dancefloor techno before gradually pulling away from beats and toward sound design, ambient textures, and emotionally rich electronic music. Based in Berlin, he built his reputation through a string of records on Shitkatapult, then signed to Mute in 2011 for The Devil's Walk, an album whose title comes from a political poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. His track "Goodbye" featuring Soap&Skin has a life of its own: it scored a pivotal scene in the Breaking Bad season 4 finale, opened the Netflix series Dark, and turned up in trailers for Prisoners and Taken 3, among others. Alongside his solo work, Ring is one half of Moderat with Modeselektor, a project that has released four albums and earned a devoted following in its own right. His 2019 album LP5 landed a Grammy nomination for Best Dance and Electronic Album, and he took home the IMPALA European Independent Album of the Year Award. In 2026 he released his sixth solo album, A Hum of Maybe on Mute, co written and co produced with Philipp Johann Thimm.
