About
Also known as: The Ocean Collective, The Oceon
Robin Staps founded The Ocean in Berlin in 2001, and the band has spent over two decades building one of the most conceptually ambitious catalogs in post metal. Rather than writing collections of songs, they think in systems: paired albums, double discs, geological timescales. Heliocentric and Anthropocentric, both released in 2010, form a philosophical critique of Christianity, while the Phanerozoic series picks up the geological concept thread from their 2007 record Precambrian. Pelagial, from 2013, is a deep sea descent in album form, released in both vocal and purely instrumental versions on the same disc. The lineup has shifted constantly since day one, with around 40 musicians passing through before a stable core emerged, but Staps and vocalist Loïc Rossetti have been the creative anchor since 2009. Their sound pulls together sludge and post metal with atmospheric and progressive textures, and occasionally djent inflected heaviness. A recent video for 'Light Pollution' suggests they are still very much at work.
