Wu Lyf built their reputation on deliberate mystery: no interviews, no press shots, barely any information at all. The Manchester quartet, whose name expands to World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation, recorded their debut album Go Tell Fire to the Mountain inside an abandoned church in Ancoats, choosing the space purely for its sound. All that reverb gave the record a cavernous, larger than life quality that critics loved, and Pitchfork handed it an 8.4 along with a Best New Music tag. The band put the whole thing out themselves, having already declined every offer from established labels. After splitting in 2012, the members scattered into various projects before Wu Lyf quietly signalled a comeback in early 2025 with a countdown on their website. They returned with the single "A New Life Is Coming" and have been playing shows since. Their described sound of "heavy pop" still fits: dense, churning and oddly anthemic, somewhere between post punk and art rock with a lot of church acoustics baked in.
