Formed in Los Angeles in 1999, A Perfect Circle brought together guitarist Billy Howerdel and Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan to create something genuinely distinct from either of their other projects. Howerdel writes the music, Keenan handles the lyrics and vocal melodies, and that division of labor has stayed locked in across every lineup shuffle the band has been through. Their debut, Mer de Noms, landed at number four on the Billboard 200 in its first week and became the highest selling debut album for a rock band at the time, which is a serious statement for a so called side project. The band has never been the most reliable in terms of activity, largely because Keenan keeps himself busy with Tool and Puscifer, but they have put out four studio albums in total. The third, Emotive, was a set of radically reworked cover songs, and after a long gap they returned with Eat the Elephant in 2018. Despite rotating members over the years, the core creative partnership between Howerdel and Keenan has kept the sound cohesive across all of it.
