Few guitarists have left a fingerprint as recognizable as Johnny Marr's. His jangly Rickenbacker and Fender Telecaster work defined the Smiths' sound across four studio albums from 1982 to 1987, a run that produced records like The Queen Is Dead, which Spin ranked as the greatest album ever made. After the Smiths split due to friction with Morrissey, Marr kept himself busy as a session player and collaborator, lending his guitar to Bryan Ferry, Kirsty MacColl, Pet Shop Boys, and Talking Heads before joining bands like Electronic, the The, Modest Mouse, and the Cribs. His solo output has been steady too. The Messenger arrived in 2013, followed by Playland in 2014 and Call the Comet in 2018. The Guardian's Alexis Petridis called him the 1980s' most inventive and distinctive guitarist, and NME handed him its Godlike Genius award in 2013. Mojo's editor Phil Alexander went even further, describing Marr as arguably Britain's last great guitar stylist.
