About

Also known as: Dolf van der Linden Metropole Orchestra, Het Metropole Orkest, Metropole Orchestra, The Metropole Orchestra, The Metropole Orkest

The largest full time jazz and pop orchestra in the world, the Metropole Orkest has been a fixture of Dutch musical life since 1945. Based in the Netherlands and built around a genuinely unusual setup, it blends big band, classical symphony and pop instrumentation into a single ensemble of up to 97 musicians, with two separate rhythm sections covering jazz on one side and pop and rock on the other. That flexibility is what makes it so sought after: the orchestra has collaborated with artists as varied as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Tori Amos, Snarky Puppy, Jacob Collier and Hardwell, while also handling film scores for the Dutch industry and performing at the North Sea Jazz festival year after year. On the Grammy front, Vince Mendoza won Best Instrumental Arrangement in 2011 for work recorded with the orchestra, and Jacob Collier's track featuring the ensemble took home an award at the 62nd Grammy Awards. Jules Buckley currently holds the baton as chief conductor.
