Pitou, the stage name of Amsterdam born Pitou Nicolaes, makes the kind of intimate indie pop that earns comparisons to folk without fully belonging there. Her early releases leaned into what 3voor12 called "broken hearted folk stripped of all frills", built around just her voice and a guitar. By the time her second EP I Fall Asleep So Fast arrived in 2018, she had expanded to a full band, and the sound grew noticeably more layered and complex. One of her more unusual projects was Lost Lines, where songwriters including Toon Tellegen, Torre Florim, Wende Snijders and Lucky Fonz III sent her lyrics they had written but never used, and she improvised songs around them live on stage. Her debut album Big Tear, released in 2023 on V2 Records, was warmly received by OOR, Trouw, De Volkskrant and 3voor12, and she toured it across Europe.
