About
Tyla made history when her 2023 single "Water" became the first song by a South African soloist to crack the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years, a feat that earned her the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance and made her the youngest African artist ever to take home a Grammy. The track blew up via a viral TikTok dance challenge and hit the top ten in South Africa, the UK, and the US simultaneously. Her sound sits at the crossroads of pop and amapiano, a blend she owns so thoroughly she's been dubbed the "Queen of Popiano". Her self titled debut album followed in March 2024, landing in the top 25 in several countries and drawing widespread critical praise. Since then she has kept the momentum going with the EP WWP in 2025 and her second studio album A*Pop. Along the way she has picked up two MTV VMAs, two BET Awards, and three MTV Europe Music Awards, quite a run for someone who quietly self released her first single, "Getting Late", back in 2019.
