Tyla has a knack for making pop feel fresh from a completely different corner of the world. The South African singer blends amapiano rhythms with radio ready pop and R&B into a sound her fans have dubbed "Popiano", and it genuinely sounds like nothing else in the charts. Her 2023 single "Water" went viral off the back of a TikTok dance challenge and shot into the top ten in South Africa, the US, and the UK, making her the first South African soloist in 55 years to crack the Billboard Hot 100. That song also won the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, making Tyla the youngest African artist ever to take home a Grammy. Her self titled debut album followed in 2024 to wide critical praise, landing in the top 25 across multiple countries including the Netherlands, the UK, and the US. She kept the momentum going with the EP WWP and then her second studio album A*Pop in 2026, which produced the top twenty Billboard Global 200 single "Chanel". Two Grammy wins, two MTV VMAs, two BET Awards, and three MTV Europe Music Awards later, she is clearly not a one hit wonder.
