Black Veil Brides built a devoted following the old fashioned way, funding their own videos and selling an extraordinary number of T shirts before a major label even came calling. Formed in Cincinnati in 2006 and later relocating to Hollywood, the band blends glam metal theatrics with hard rock and metalcore, drawing heavily on the visual style of Kiss and Mötley Crüe: black makeup, studded leather, body paint, the works. Their 2010 debut We Stitch These Wounds landed at No. 36 on the Billboard Top 200 and topped the Independent chart in its first week, which was a striking debut for a band that had essentially built everything themselves. Their second album Set the World on Fire brought them to a much bigger stage via Lava Music and Universal Republic Records, with tracks landing in major film placements and the band picking up Best New Artist honors from Revolver's Golden Gods and a Best Newcomers nod from Kerrang!. The name itself carries real weight: in Roman Catholic tradition a Black Veil Bride is a woman who gives up worldly pleasures to devote her life to the church, a sacrifice the band draws a parallel to in the commitment required by a life in music.
