Gavin DeGraw made his name with "I Don't Want to Be", a song that became so embedded in pop culture largely because it served as the theme for the long running CW drama One Tree Hill. His debut album Chariot came out in 2003 and went platinum, with all three of its singles, "I Don't Want to Be", "Follow Through", and the title track, each going gold. The album was recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and produced by Mark Endert, and DeGraw even put out an acoustic version the following year, Chariot Stripped, which included a cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come". His pop rock sound sits comfortably between soul influence and singer songwriter craft, and his tenor voice carries what people often describe as a hint of grit. Later albums kept him in the conversation: Sweeter delivered the hit single "Not Over You", and his duet with Colbie Caillat, "We Both Know", earned a Grammy nomination. In 2022 he released Face the River alongside a documentary about making the record while navigating the deaths of both his parents.
