SOFI TUKKER, the New York based duo of Sophie Hawley Weld and Tucker Halpern, built their sound around a genuine love for Brazilian culture, weaving Portuguese lyrics, bossa nova rhythms, cowbells and spaghetti western guitars into high energy dance music. Their track "Drinkee", adapted from a poem by Brazilian poet Chacal, earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording in 2017, and "Best Friend" became one of those songs that everyone heard whether they knew it or not, thanks to Apple's live iPhone X reveal. Their debut album Treehouse followed in 2018, landing another Grammy nod, this time for Best Dance/Electronic Album. During the COVID lockdowns they kept momentum going with hundreds of livestream DJ sets, building a devoted fan community called the Freak Fam along the way. Their second studio album Wet Tennis arrived in 2022, and in May 2025 they released butter, a deep dive into Brazilian genres including samba, MPB, bossa nova and carimbó, featuring artists like Seu Jorge and Liniker. A recent visualizer for "Pick Up The Phone" featuring Nonô suggests they are keeping that Brazilian thread very much alive.
