Death Cab for Cutie built their reputation out of the Pacific Northwest indie scene, blending melodic indie rock and indie pop with the kind of sensitive, introspective songwriting that turned Ben Gibbard into a cult figure. Their 2003 album Transatlanticism was the turning point, and when Plans followed in 2005 on Atlantic Records, indie rock suddenly had a mainstream foothold. Narrow Stairs hit number one on the charts in 2008, and the band kept pushing their sound across a string of albums over the next decade and a half. Chris Walla, guitarist and producer since the very beginning, stepped away before Kintsugi came out in 2015, leaving Gibbard, bassist Nick Harmer, and drummer Jason McGerr to carry things forward with newer members Dave Depper and Zac Rae. The band released Thank You for Today in 2018 and Asphalt Meadows in 2022, showing no signs of slowing down. Their eleventh album, I Built You a Tower, arrived in 2026.
