Jacob Collier has a habit of making jaws drop, whether he's looping six instruments simultaneously on stage, conducting an entire orchestra in real time, or getting a crowd of thousands to sing tight harmony on cue. The London musician blends jazz, funk, soul, pop, classical and plenty more into something that refuses a tidy label, with a particular obsession with reharmonisation and close harmony that sets his work apart from almost anyone else working today. His 2016 debut In My Room, recorded entirely by himself in the back room of his family home in Finchley, put him on the map almost instantly. From there he spent years building Djesse, a four volume, 50 song project featuring dozens of artists and ensembles, including the Metropole Orkest on the first volume. By the time Djesse Vol. 4 landed in March 2024, Collier had won seven Grammy Awards across five consecutive albums, including wins for his arrangements of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long", "Moon River" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". He also collaborated with Chris Martin on a live rendition of Fix You at the O2 Arena. Few artists operate at this level of musical ambition and pull it off.
