The Kooks named themselves after a David Bowie song, which pretty much sets the tone for a band that has always worn its classic influences on its sleeve. Formed in Brighton in 2004, they signed to Virgin Records within months of getting together, and their 2006 debut Inside In/Inside Out became a phenomenon, going five times platinum in the UK. That album launched a string of singles including "Naïve" and "She Moves in Her Own Way" that pushed them into the UK top ten, and they took home Best UK and Ireland Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards that same year. Their follow up Konk went straight to number one in the UK. Over the years The Kooks have refused to stand still. Their sound has moved through Britpop, reggae, ska, and into funk and hip hop territory, always anchored by Luke Pritchard's vocals and the band's ear for a hooky guitar line. Their most recent album Never/Know arrived in 2025 and reached number five on the UK chart, proving the Brighton outfit still has plenty to say.
